11 tips to optimise your product photos

Brand photographs are your most valuable asset. Your photos should tell a story and answer questions potential buyers may have about your products. The good news is, it's easy to get great photos with today's devices. I have some fabulous tips for you!


1. Get your lighting right

Ensure your products are lit well. This can be achieved with lamps, natural light or a lightbox. Be careful to avoid shadows. Taking photos outside can be a great solution.


3. Simplify your background

Another option is to blur the background, easily done on modern phones with the live focus setting. Taking photographs in nature is also a great way of creating a beautiful backdrop. You can also use Canva.com to create a new background or remove the background, allowing a clean photo of your product.


3. Photograph your product in use

 Use props that relate to using your product.  Show it placed in your home or as part of a beautiful display. Think about the story this photo of a Beecloth Wraps’ packet tells. Help your customer see themselves in your brand story.


 4. Go into detail

In a shop, people would pick up an item, turn it over, look at the back and look closely at the detail. Photograph every angle. Zoom into any unique or interesting detail. You can use a website like Canva to make this into a photo collage, like this beautiful photo from Made in the Avenue.


5. Show scale

Put an item next to your product that is universally recognised and standard sized.  A pound coin is a great example. Another option is to include a ruler or measuring tape in your photo.


6. Put yourself in the story

At a craft fair or shop, you would be chatting to people, and you sell your work more than the work sells itself. People are moving towards connection with the objects that they bring into their lives. That often starts with who you are and how you made it.


7. Include a snapshot of your creative process

Your process is an essential part of your story. Buyers want to see how you make your products. It makes them feel connected to your products. It also helps to show that a product is actually handmade.


8. Crop it with care

TOP TIP: Resize your photos to 1200×1200 pixels BEFORE you upload them to the Marketplace. This will help the site look clean and let customers zoom in on your photo!


9. Filters Are Your Friends

I used to think using filters was cheating. In reality, the camera doesn’t always capture the colours. Even with using filters, buyers often say the products are more beautiful in real life.


10. Show Your Brand

11. Get Professional Help

Although you can get great photos with your phone, it may not be your forté. To reduce stress, nothing beats a professional photographer. Product photography is worth the cost, as they’re yours to use and will pay for themselves over time!
